BREAKING: an update on Ryan Roberts and NY Phil’s upcoming Principal Oboe audition

Ryan Roberts (by Chris Lee)

The New York Philharmonic has auditions to fill their vacant Principal Oboe chair over the next few weeks. The musical interwebs has been rife with widespread speculation, consternation, and Kalshi/Polymarket betting (OK, I’m kidding about the last one) around as to whether Ryan Roberts, current holder of the same job with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, would take the audition.

Why might a local product returning home after a decade plus on the East Coast want do do that?

  • He was, er, is still officially the English horn of the NY Phil (listed officially on their roster as being on leave). He is no stranger to that orchestra, and his playing there has been consistently lauded.
  • His Music Director there would be . . . (checks notes) . . . Gustavo Dudamel, the same guy who hired him here in LA.
  • He still has connections to that city, having taught at multiple institutions and maintaining many friendships
  • Most importantly, he’s really good.

Speaking of Ryan Roberts . . .” (from All is Yar, March 19, 2026)

Well, let the speculation end. All is Yar has definitive news on this topic . . .

I’ve learned directly from Mr. Roberts that he will NOT be taking the upcoming audition for Principal Oboe of the NY Phil.

“Whew!” if you’re an LA Phil fan. “Ugh!” if you’re a NY Phil fan.

Sorry, New York. Forgive me if it makes me think of this moment . . .

That said, my understanding is that Mr. Roberts is still working towards being awarded tenure with the LA Phil. I’m willing to bet he gets it. If anyone wants to take me up on that, LMK and I’ll see you on the micro-derivatives trading app of your choice.

  1. Fantastic news for LAPhil! I half-joke with friends in NY who care about such things that the Dudamel-for-Roberts trade is a big sneaky win for LA…
