A tip of the hat to Shannita Williams (LA Opera’s Associate Director of Communications, Social Media) for pointing me towards “Weird Al” Yankovic’s latest release, “Word Crimes,” an absolutely spot-on ode to proper grammar and word usage, set to the tune of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.”
I’m a little sad he didn’t skewer “very unique” in his rant, and I happen to be a fan of the Oxford comma, but the inclusion of “cunning linguist” more than makes up for both of those issues. (I’m still waiting for the NSFW version of the video featuring Emily Ratajkowski, Elle Evans, and Jessi M’Bengue).
This video is part of Weird Al’s #8videos8days project in support of his new album, Mandatory Fun. As of today, the other two videos in the series are:
- “Foil:” A stab at both spoiled food and conspiracy theories (really) set to Lorde’s “Royals”
- “Tacky:” A send-up of Pharrell’s “Happy,” with assists from Aisha Tyler, Margaret Cho, Eric Stonestreet, Kristen Schaal, and Jack Black
So far, “Word Crimes” is easily the best of them. I’m looking forward to the final five.
